There is one place to give: the endowment at St. Petersburg College. It compounds, so a gift today raises what the fund awards every year after this one.

The award inside the fire department is listed below for context only. It is established and funded by Karen and Jim Harte and is not seeking gifts.

The Robert T. Nugent Endowment at St. Petersburg College

An endowed fund for fire academy students, established and funded by James and Karen Harte, Rob’s mother and step-father. The principal is invested by the SPC Foundation and a percentage is released as scholarship money every year, so a gift today raises the award for every class after this one. It pays for the costs financial aid does not touch: boots, books, exam fees, the drive to clinicals.

Four awards went out in the first year — $2,000 the family added outside the principal, so no one had to wait for the fund to settle. Two of the 2026 recipients recorded this.

On the SPC Foundation form, choose "Other" for the fund and enter the Robert T. Nugent Endowment by name so the gift is routed correctly.

Prefer a check? Make it payable to the St. Petersburg College Foundation, P.O. Box 13489, St. Petersburg, FL 33733, and write the Robert T. Nugent Endowment in the memo line.

The DC Rob Nugent Award for Excellence

Three $1,500 awards presented at the St. Petersburg Fire Rescue annual banquet, one to each shift, to members who hold the standard Rob held. Established and funded by Karen and Jim Harte, the entire family reads every nomination together and selects the winners.

These three awards are paid for and take no outside gifts. Nominations come only from the department’s Division Chiefs and District Chiefs. If you want to give in Rob’s name, give to the endowment above — that is the fund the family is working to grow.

Write something on the tribute wall instead. Luke and Brady will read it, and it costs nothing but the ten minutes it takes to remember properly.
